其实，画壁讲的是一代大师(曾志伟 饰 不动)突破贪、色、痴、恶等种种心结，最终功德圆满、立地成佛的故事。故事中的僧人“不动”，就是佛教密宗中的五大明王之首——不动明王。而故事中的姑姑生活在百花丛中，周围女子皆有花名，唯独姑姑剧中一直没有提及其姓名；再看其一身蓝绿色的装扮，她应该是暗指佛教五大明王中的“孔雀明王”。 

本剧的妙处就在于用一个多角爱情故事为主线，暗地里却讲述了一个悟禅修佛的故事。不过，这条暗线过于隐晦，没有相关宗教知识、不潜心研究的人始终参不透其中的真相。
