1978年，陈瓦儿、吴西凯、李墙、胡美华、许卫东几个发小儿，都进了高考考场。陈瓦儿和李墙意外被赶出考场，吴西凯和胡美华考入同一所大学，许卫东去了军校。随之他们的生活工作都拉开了差距。李墙最终娶了陈瓦儿，并去深圳打拼赚钱，远走美国的胡美华改学了儿童心理学，许卫东在守卫边疆的艰苦环境里，成长为一名军事过硬的军官。踏实本分的吴西凯，毕业分配到区里做了一名基层干部。同在一条起跑线上，枪声一响，每个人选择了不同的目标向前奔跑，命运的起承转合又时不时地把大家拉到一起，看着那些胡同牌楼老街道，这里已是世界的金融街。
