三圣母是华山神西岳大帝的第三女，她的哥哥是二郎和三郎，但是在《宝莲灯》的故事中三圣母的哥哥是二郎神，她因为下界和人类成亲有了孩子，而被天庭惩罚，关押在了山下，她的宝物宝莲灯被儿子沉香继承，沉香在知道了自己的身份后，带着宝莲灯去救母亲。

二郎神一直都在阻挡沉香救母，还夺走了他的宝莲灯，但是在《宝莲灯》大结局中，我们才知道二郎神这么做都是为了锻炼沉香，希望他的武功和修为都能够有所增进，自己的修为强大了，才能够救出母亲，用心良苦。
