程兵为了接近凶手，化身送水工，与路过送水站的业主发生冲突，两人被带到警局，程兵自首，警方对业主进行取证，没想到他竟然是2002年强奸致人重伤案的嫌犯，该业主被拘留，这是程兵的最终目的，他早就锁定了该业主是另一嫌犯，故意与之发生矛盾，到了警局，对方的真实身份自然也就曝光了。

据悉，这部电影所讲的故事是真实的，原型事件也是送水工跟业主扭打在一起，结果业主是逃犯，经过一番深挖后，发现送水工是刑满释放的警察。现实中嫌犯并不是犯事几天后被抓住的，而是第二次入室盗窃时被发现，只有一个被带回警局，另一个逃跑了。

电影中是三大队的人一起追凶，而现实中只有程兵一个人追捕嫌犯，最后嫌犯伏法，程兵跟妻子复婚，两人合开了一家培训机构。
