案发后，警方很快抓到了王大勇，可是王大勇死活不肯说王二勇的下落，三大队在审讯过程中对王大勇刑讯逼供，动了手，导致王大勇死亡，所有涉事警察被判入狱，最久被判十二年，程兵则是八年有期徒刑。

程兵出狱后开始寻找王二勇的下落，他是个孤胆英雄，执着于真相。原著中作者提到两点，一个是程兵现实中抓到了在外逃了十二年的嫌犯，并将自己的抓捕过程写了一份《情况说明》，这是很重要的卷宗，已经入档，所以作者看不到。

另外，程兵拒绝了作者的采访，作者为了完成这部作品，采访了程兵身边的人，将整个过程梳理清楚。电影里是三大队五个人出狱后一起抓逃犯，而现实中只有程兵一个人追凶，做了很多底层工作，最后将凶手绳之以法。
