越州（今绍兴）上虞县有一女子祝英台，喜欢吟读诗书，一心想出外求学，但是当时的女子不能在外抛头露面，于是就和丫头银心乔装成男子，前往越州城读书。二人在半途遇见了也要前往越州念书的鄞县（今宁波）书生梁山伯及书僮士久，梁山伯和祝英台二人一见如故，遂结伴同行，前往越州。

在越州三年期间，梁山伯和祝英台形影不离，白天一同读书、晚上同床共枕，祝英台内心暗暗地爱慕梁山伯，但梁山伯个性憨直，始终不知道祝英台是个女的，更不知道她的心意。有一次清明节放假、二人去镜湖游玩的时候，祝英台借景物屡次向梁山伯暗示，可是梁山伯完全无法明白，甚至取笑祝英台把自己比喻成女子，最后祝英台只得直接地向梁山伯表示，梁山伯才恍然大悟。可是这件事全被在一旁偷看的马文才得知，马文才也知道祝英台原来是个女的了。后来家人写信催祝英台回家，临走前，祝英台留一封信告诉梁山伯「二八、三七、四六定」，意思是要梁山伯十天后去祝府提亲，但是梁山伯却以为是三个十天加在一起，所以一个月后才去提亲，等到梁山伯欢欢喜喜赶到祝家时，才知道马文才已经抢先一步提亲、并且下了聘礼，梁山伯只得心碎地离开，祝英台沿路相送、难舍难分。

Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai hit it off, and they went to Yuezhou together.

During the three years in Yuezhou, Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai were inseparable, studying together during the day and sleeping together in the same bed at night. Zhu Yingtai secretly admired Liang Shanbo, but Liang Shanbo had a straightforward personality and never knew that Zhu Yingtai was a woman. , let alone her mind.
