"Meng Hua Lu" is adapted from Guan Hanqing's Yuan Zaju "Zhao Pan'er Fengyue Saves the Wind and Dust". Zhao Pan'er and Song Yinzhang are the characters in Guan Hanqing's original work. The first 6 episodes of the TV series have finished the story of saving Fengchen, and the following is a brand new story. The two characters Sanniang and Zhaodi added in the TV series are both sharp and capable women with clear love and hatred, sharp speech, and are no more similar to the rise of the citizen class in the Song Dynasty than Pan'er's protagonist Halo and Yinzhang's youngest daughter. From them, we may have a glimpse of the style of Tokyo women in the Northern Song Dynasty.

Sanniang cooks good fruits, vegetables, and soups. She even slaughtered pigs to save money for Fu Xingui's business. Unfortunately, her heartbroken husband doesn't know how to cherish it. He only covets the widowed Dow's money. Divorced, the ignorant son Zifang only blamed his mother for forcing her to study, and did not stand on Sanniang's side. Sanniang threw herself into the river and was rescued by Pan'er, and then came to Tokyo with Pan'er.

The commodity economy developed unprecedentedly during the Song Dynasty, and China was the most economically developed country in the world at that time. The development of industry, commerce and handicrafts promoted the prosperity of commerce and naturally provided more jobs. Sanniang's good cooking skills will naturally not be buried in Tokyo. The fruits she cooks are sought after by the proprietress of the inn and the guests, making her realize that she can also create value and can rely on her own skills to make a living.

If it is said that Sanniang wanted to be self-reliant because she fell down, then Zhaodi at a young age may be more affected by the social atmosphere at that time, so she planned to save her dowry early. Zhaodi has an unfortunate native family. Her mother valued sons over daughters and only used her daughter as a tool for making money. Therefore, when Zhaodi mentioned her family members, she always gritted her teeth and said that they were all dead. Despite this, Zhaodi still deeply agrees with her mother's mention that women who marry more dowry will have status in their husband's family, which is also in line with the style of generous marriage in the Song Dynasty. Zhaodi began to plan for her future after she fell in love with Chen Lian. In terms of marriage and love attitude, Zhaodi and Sanniang are very similar, and they are not shy at all. Sanniang also said that she is only in her early thirties. Why can't you marry again.

This kind of confidence is only produced after you can make a living. Only when you don't need to rely on others can you dare to boldly pursue your own happiness. Cai Xiang, a famous official and calligrapher in the Northern Song Dynasty, once lamented, "Looking at the current customs, marrying a wife ignores the family and asks for wealth." From this we can see the impact of the development of the commodity economy on the traditional concept of marriage. Before Pan'er wanted to run the restaurant, she found that many officials' family members would participate in the operation of the restaurant. Historically, during the Song Dynasty, many officials and their family members did participate in commercial activities, which led to the prosperity of business in the society.

In the emerging citizens like Sanniang and Zhaodi, we see the most smoky side of Tokyo. It is lively, prosperous, and everyone has the hope of living a good life.
